C-SoDA Speaker Series – Medha Uppala & Howard Liu (C-SoDA Postdocs)
Our inaugural postdoctoral scholars, Medha Uppala and Howard Liu, will introduce themselves to the Penn State SoDA community with brief presentations of recent research projects and discuss research they hope to pursue while at Penn State.
Medha Uppala
"Modeling Southern California Wildfires using Linear Network Point Processes"
Medha Uppala received her PhD in Statistics from UCLA in 2018. Her research background is in spatial methodology and social network analysis. She has worked on applying these methodologies on California Wildfires and high resolution energy consumption data. She is interested in studying causal methodology on social networks to study the effect of information diffusion in social media and other networks.
Howard Liu
"Modeling the Dissent-Repression Dynamic: A Network Approach"
Howard Liu received his PhD in Political Science from Duke University and will be a Lecturer (Assistant Professor) in the Department of Government at the University of Essex in the fall of 2020. His research focuses on protests, state repression, and human rights, with particular attention to the methodological implications for network analysis that stem from interdependent conflict behavior. Networks, spatial analysis, and automated text analysis are the primary methods he develops and applies to achieve a better understanding of conflict processes.
